Island Trains
The Island Line runs from the very end of Ryde Pier through to Shanklin, providing an effective through route from London to the heart of the island’s sandy beaches. A typical journey from Waterloo to Shanklin takes around 2 ½ hours. If you are a keen cyclist, as an added bonus, you can take your bike on the trains and ferries as well! (Only exception is the Red Jet from Southampton to Cowes).
Island line trains generally run twice an hour, Monday to Sunday (check timetables for out-of-season Sunday services).
As well as Ryde and Sandown Bay area, the train also stops off at Brading, the home of Brading Station Heritage Centre. Brading Station is also an ideal location to start and finish a walk across Brading Marshes, ideal for bird spotters.
Special Offers
There are various special offers and rover tickets available. There is even a combined bus and train day rover ticket, price £12. These tickets are available from Ryde Esplanade & Shanklin ticket offices, Island Line Trains conductors or from Southern Vectis bus drivers. Also on offer are combined hovercraft / train tickets, Fast cat / train / steam train tickets and more.
Reminiscences
The rolling stock of Island Line might be recognised by the older generations who have travelled on the London Underground years ago. The carriages are old underground stock, so this can be a trip down memory lane for some.
